24 Hours In... London: Dave Needham, Designer
Obviously I spent more than 24 hours in London as I live and work here but a pal was down from home (side note: Dave is famously Northern), whose favourite thing is also eating and drinking nice stuff, so we decided to do a little culinary tour.
This is just outside the flat, but I liked the light, the plants in the window and the funky little car.
First we stopped off at St. John in Neal’s Yard (but they’ve also got a restaurant in Spitalfields, hence the EC postcode which confused Bex) for coffee and a pastry. They also do some real good custard doughnuts (see below — good bread, filling ratio).
It wasn’t too busy; we got a little barrel to sit at outside St. John Bakery and did some people watching. It was quaint and peaceful.
And then we headed back East, stopping at a pub on this corner to meet other pals. The TO LET sign is a bit ugly but the colours are nice; it’s kind of like a Hopper.
Next we went to Mikkeller, the beer place on Hackney Road. It’s got very cool (Danish) branding and a lovely selection of beers — including a Northern beer in association with Rick Astley, which I’d seen on their poster — though it was ‘nowhere to be seen’, according to the woman behind the bar.
